چکیده

We present 594 radial velocity measurements for 71 white dwarfs obtained during our search for binary white dwarfs and not reported elsewhere. We identify three excellent candidate binaries, which require further observations to confirm our preliminary estimates for their orbital periods, and one other good candidate. We investigate whether our data support the existence of a population of single, low mass (0.5M ) white dwarfs (LMWDs). These stars are difficult to explain in standard models of stellar evolution. We find that a model with a mixed single/binary population is at least ∼ 20 times more likely to explain our data than a pure binary population. This result depends on assumed period distributions for binary LMWDs, assumed companion masses and several other factors. Therefore, the evidence in favour of the existence of a population of single LMWDs is not sufficient, in our opinion, to firmly establish the existence of such a population, but does suggest that extended observations of LMWDs to obtain a more convincing result would be worthwhile .

D - Kinematics of White Dwarfs from the SPY - Project

We present kinematics of a sample of 107 DA white dwarfs from the SPY project (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY) and discuss kinematic criteria for a distinction of thin disk, thick disk, and halo populations. This is the first homogeneous sample of white dwarfs for which 3D space motions have been determined. Since the percentage of old stars among white dwarfs is higher than among main-sequence st...

A White Dwarf Discovery Machine Stefan Jordan

Gaia is a satellite mission of the ESA, aiming at absolute astro-metric measurements of about one billion stars (V < 20) with unprecedented accuracy. Additionally, magnitudes and colors will be obtained for all these stars, while radial-velocities will be determined only for bright objects (V < 17.5). However, the wavelength range for the radial-velocity instrument is rather unsuitable for most...

Cool White Dwarfs Revisited – New Spectroscopy and Photometry

In this paper we present new and improved data on 38 cool white dwarfs identified by Oppenheimer et al. (2001) (OHDHS) as candidate dark halo objects. Using the high-resolution spectra obtained with LRIS on Keck I, we measure precise radial velocities for 13 white dwarfs that show an Hαabsorption line. We show that the knowledge of radial velocities on average decreases the UV -plane velocities...

Radial Velocity Observations of L Dwarfs

We report on the development of a technique for precise radial-velocity measurements of cool stars and brown dwarfs in the near infrared. Our technique is analogous to the Iodine (I2) absorption cell method that has proven so successful in the optical regime. We rely on telluric CH4 absorption features to serve as a wavelength reference, relative to which we measure Doppler shifts of the CO and...

The fraction of double degenerates among DA white dwarfs

We present the results of a radial velocity survey designed to measure the fraction of double degenerates among DA white dwarfs. The narrow core of the Hα line was observed twice or more for 46 white dwarfs yielding radial velocities accurate to a few km s −1. This makes our survey the most sensitive to the detection of double degenerates undertaken to date. We found no new double degenerates i...
